Enhancing Urban Mobility: Integrating Collective Perception Systems in Automated Public Transport

Authored by Mario Ilic and Abhay Joshi, Technical University of Munich

In an era of rapid urbanization and technological advancement, the challenge of creating efficient, safe, and inclusive public transportation systems has never been more pressing. At the Chair of Traffic Engineering and Control at Technical University of Munich (TUM), we've been exploring innovative solutions to address this challenge, focusing on the integration of Collective Perception Systems (CPS) in automated public transport. This work has been executed within the scope of the research project ‘OBACHT’, which is funded by the TUM Georg Nemetschek Institute ‘Artificial Intelligence for the Built World’. Our research aims to enhance the capabilities of automated vehicles, particularly in detecting and responding to vulnerable road users in complex urban environments.

Transmit Decentralized Environmental Notification Messages

Effortless Transmission in cube-its using Python

Decentralized Environmental Notification Messages (DENMs) are part of the ETSI Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) standards. They are used to inform vehicles about road hazards and other critical events. A primary use case for DENM is alerting vehicles to dangers such as accidents, roadworks, and obstacles. These messages enhance road safety by delivering timely and precise information to vehicles and drivers.

Equipping a Police Motorcycle with V2X

Approaching Emergency Vehicle Warning

It has now been more than 2 years since we presented the first demonstration of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) for two-wheeler safety as part of the Connected Motorcycle Consortium (CMC). There were some at that time groundbreaking applications demonstrated such as Emergency Electronic Brake Light (EEBL), Approaching Emergency Vehicle Warning (AEVW).
